As a result of graduating from the Bachelor of Music program (Boston University 1963) However, following that I was witnessing the liberal arts as a teacher (Brown University 1971-75) I'm an advocate of education which integrates the study of arts alongside study of other fields. Not surprising for an ethnomusicologist (MA 1967, PhD at UCLA)! My ethnomusicology program, which I began in 1975 at UC Berkeley in 1975-1976, is comfortably located in the music department at the College of Letters and Science. I am a fan of pursuing multiple passions and seeing the big overall picture. Students from both undergraduate and graduate levels (for which I've written three textbooks: Music in India, The Classical Traditions of India, Thinking Musically: Music in Japan - Experience Music: Expressing Cultural Expression) enjoy my teaching. Thereafter, I'll switch between academic pursuits and administrative duties (I am Chair of Department of Music from 1983 until 1988, Dean of undergraduate Advising from 1992 to 1998 and Chair of College of Letters and Science Deans from 1994 to 1998; Chair of the Group of Asian Studies since 1999 and I am now the Chair of Department of Music).
